Whenever Nathan is working on 2nd shift, the kids actually have to say goodbye to him when he leaves for work. That's a new and different experience for all of us, because he has never left the house any later than 6:30am for a job....in 6.5 years of marriage!
It has been lovely having him home in the mornings - we all sleep in and take walks together, get a few chores done. But when it's goodbye time, it's really a sorry sight. Here's what a typical "goodbye" includes:
We usually eat lunch (our dinner) and then Nathan has to leave right away. When he gets up from the table, Lydia starts saying, "No, don't go!" Lukey starts saying, "Winow! Winow!" - which means, he wants to get down and watch out of the window. Then they both jump out of their seats and give Nathan hugs and kisses; sometimes Lukey says "Miss! Miss!", which means he'll miss him. :(
On a very dramatic morning, Lydia clings to Nathan legs and says, "Don't worry Luke, I'll make him stay!" and Nathan has to hobble leg over to the door with Lydia stuck to him. After prying her off, both kids jump up onto the sofa and watch him get into his car. Lydia usually yells to him through the window, and we usually give him "four cheers" as he leaves. Then they do the "I love you" sign and wave goodbye. To finish-up this emotional event, Luke and Lydia look at each other and start crying and moaning fake tears - both of them! - and I have to say, "I know. We miss our Daddy, don't we?"
Goodness! With all that, you'd think he was moving to China or something....nope. Just going to work.
